Energy Connections

Energy Services

Lumea provides end-to-end grid connection services for renewable generators, battery storage and large load customers, from first enquiry through to long-term operation across Australia's energy network.

Our energy services

Lumea is supporting the growth of renewable energy in Australia by connecting renewable generators, battery storage, data centres and large industrial loads to the transmission grid, covering everything from wind, solar and hybrid generation through to large-scale energy storage.

We take ownership of the whole connection lifecycle, building, owning, operating and maintaining these assets so customers stay reliably connected for the long term. We tailor our approach to every project, delivering flexible solutions designed around the unique needs, objectives and requirements of each customer.

The energy connection process, from enquiry to operation

We are delivering Australia’s largest and most complex connection projects.

Every project is different, and timelines vary depending on scope, location and complexity. As a general guide, most projects move through five stages, from first enquiry to ongoing operation:

1. Exploration

Est: 3 - 6 months

Feasibility studies and initial project scoping, with Lumea advising on connection enquiry requirements from the outset.

2. Connection Enquiry

Est: 30–40 business days

Formal submission to the transmission network service provider, with Lumea managing preliminary agreements alongside it.

3. Contracting and Application to Connect

Est: Project specific

Commercial offer, contract negotiation and the formal application to connect, with Lumea guiding customers through regulatory requirements and AEMO coordination at every step.

4. Delivery

Est: 12–24 months, depending on scope

Design, procurement and construction, managed end to end.

5. Operations and Maintenance

Est: ongoing

Lumea manages the operation, maintenance and modification of connection assets for the life of the asset.

Why connect to the grid with Lumea

Choosing who to work with when connecting your asset to the grid is one of the most consequential decisions in any renewable energy investment.

Speed

We work meaningfully with stakeholders from the very beginning to make sure critical milestones are met. Lumea has achieved some of the fastest project registration times connecting a renewable project to the National Electricity Market.

Tailored Energy Grid Connection Solutions

We prioritise understanding our customers' unique needs and goals. With highly skilled engineers, asset and project managers, we provide tailored, commercially agile solutions, leaving more time for customers to focus on their core business.

Navigating Regulatory Approvals

We have deep experience navigating the complex regulatory framework surrounding high voltage connections, guiding customers through the process with expert knowledge and a flexible approach.

Partners

Connections are famously risky, but we managed to energise on schedule. I would describe Lumea less as a service provider and more as a coach. Having that expertise beside you takes away a lot of the uncertainty.

Origin Energy

We have working relationships at all levels. That makes a big difference when challenges arise. We focused on what was best for the project first and dealt with commercial discussions alongside that. That approach helped us keep the project on track.

Renewable energy projects we've delivered across NSW and VIC

Here are some of the energy connection projects Lumea has delivered, with many more underway across Australia. They reflect the scale and complexity of the connections we manage every day. We're delivering Australia's largest and most complex connection projects.

Our NSW hub

Lumea's NSW connections span the state's largest wind and solar farms, its most significant renewable storage project and the first data centre directly connected to the transmission network. It's a portfolio that reflects the scale and diversity of New South Wales' energy transition.

Energy services FAQs

What are grid connection services?

Grid connection services cover everything required to connect a generator, battery storage system, data centre or large load to the electricity network, including feasibility studies, regulatory approvals, design, construction and market registration.

Most projects take between 18 months and 3 years from first enquiry to being fully connected, though this can be shorter or longer depending on project scope, location and complexity.

Projects typically move through five stages: exploration, connection enquiry, contracting and application to connect, delivery, and ongoing operations.

See our Connection Process Fact Sheet for full detail.

Yes. Lumea provides grid connection services for battery storage projects, including the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub, one of the largest batteries in the southern hemisphere.

See more information on Battery Energy Storage Systems.

Yes. Lumea designs and delivers energy connections for data centres and other large load customers, including NEXTDC S4, NSW's first data centre connected to the transmission network.

Lumea's Energy Asset Management service takes over from there, covering long-term operations, maintenance and asset performance for the life of your connection.

Renewable energy delivers lower long-term power prices, improved energy security, diversification of energy sources, lower emissions and significant regional economic benefits.

Transmission and connection projects alone create thousands of jobs, Lumea's New England Transmission Infrastructure project is expected to support around 2,000 construction jobs and hundreds of ongoing operational roles, while reducing reliance on high-emission generating power supplies.
